Areas of Practise
Trusts and Estates
We strive to understand our clients' goals, family and financial situation in order to create the best plan for the management and distribution of their estate. We prepare all of the necessary documents for a proper estate plan such as wills, testamentary and living trusts, special needs trusts for a disabled child, powers of attorney and health care directives.
Our firm provides a full range of probate and estate administration services. We can handle the entire probate process or assist the executor or administrator as needed. Our services include identifying estate assets, working with beneficiaries of the estate, the transfer or sale of assets, payment of estate debts and claims, preparation of all necessary probate filings, preparation of Connecticut estate tax return and attendance at any necessary probate hearings.
The creation of a trust by a grantor is highly personal and the goals of the trust, therefore, are important and must be properly followed. We represent and act as trustee of all types of trusts and manage the trust assets, provide annual accountings, monthly statements and provide advice on the proper distributions from the trust to the trust beneficiaries. We always work closely with all interested parties on a personal level to ensure that the grantor's wishes and the relationships between all parties connected to the trust are recognized.
Conservatorships and Guardianships
When a family member or friend is unable to make fully-informed decisions due to mental decline, disability or substance abuse, the probate court is sometimes asked to become involved to appoint someone to manage the situation under the supervision of the court. We have extensive experience practicing before the probate court and are frequently appointed by the probate court to represent parties involved in complex conservatorship, guardianship, fiduciary and parental rights matters.
We have helped many families deal with the legal, financial and practical aspects of aging. We work with families to navigate plan and apply for Medicaid/Title 19, including the protection and spend down of assets. We also advise families on resident rights when they are contemplating or have already entered a nursing home or assisted living facility.
Our firm has years of experience handling real estate purchases, sales and refinancings, which include review and negotiation of purchase and sale contracts, resolving title and zoning issues, managing the mortage loan process, and attending your closing. We also work with the local building and zoning departments to resolve any construction and zoning issues.
